香港的殖民時期由十九世紀中旬正式展開，吸引了不少西方教會藉著香港這個中轉地進駐大中華區宣教。因著內地政治環境轉變的緣故，多間教會最後留守香港發展，並於華人密集的中西區以至西營盤開辦教堂，繼而再設立學校部，營造了今天饒富歷史感的宗教及儒林氛圍。學府林立的西營盤，不僅是香港大學的所在地，更是多間傳統名校的教育搖籃，今日的書香文化，背後與香港歷史與教會發展其實有著密不可分的關係。
Since becoming a British colony in the mid-19th century, Hong Kong has attracted missionary societies from the West, who saw it as a base to spread the Gospel in greater China. After the political situation in Mainland China changed, however, many missionary societies remained and later expanded in Hong Kong. These missionary societies built churches in the densely populated Central and Western district, and also in Sai Ying Pun, before they started to build schools. The establishment of churches and schools in Sai Ying Pun contributed to the historically religious and academic character of the area. Sai Ying Pun, where you can find many schools, is not only where the University of Hong Kong is situated, but also the cradle of many renowned schools. The scholarly atmosphere in the area is inseparable from the development of missionary societies in Hong Kong history.
